About A Simple Herstory + Herstory on Film & Face to Face to Face to Face the Nation @ Powerhouse
A Simple Herstory is a Telly Award-winning and Webby Award-honored multi-platform audio fiction exploration of the 100+ women who have run for President of the United States. The initial season revolved around Victoria Woodhull, arguably the first woman to run in 1872, before women had the right to vote. Season 2 revolves around the life and times of Margaret Chase Smith who ran for President in 1964. She was a member of the Republican Party and the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress. While it is an audio drama, Season 2 borrows from 20th century film styles to create a complex portrait of the Senator from Maine, challenging preconceived notions, historical facts, and our perceptions of American culture. Episodes presented at Powerhouse look at Maragaret Chase Smith's ascent to the House of Representatives, through her husband, Clyde Smith, as well as her possibly knotty relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt. As with Season 1, Season 2 takes a lesser-known story, presents it, and then works to deconstruct it.

From Herstory on Film, w/Margaret Chase Smith (MCS) and Clyde Smith
MCS: Take this race seriously. You are running for the House of Representatives. We have to win this.
CLYDE: We?
MCS: Yes.
CLYDE: Is that French or presumption?
MCS: Start the car.
CLYDE: In a minute. I have to see a man about a horse.
MCS: Bladder trouble?
CLYDE: Blabber trouble from you, while I’m gone write me a speech. Got that typewriter in the backseat.
CLYDE wanders off.
MCS: As if I haven’t already written three drafts and collated them... That man wouldn’t be dogcatcher without me. Without me … there is no without me.
