About A Simple Herstory + Declaration of Conscience @ Powerhouse
Returning to Powerhouse for additional episodes-in-progress is A Simple Herstory, a groundbreaking — Webby Award-honored, Anthem Award-winning and Telly Award-winning — multi-platform audio fiction exploration of the 100+ women who have run for President of the United States. Season 2 revolves around the life and times of Margaret Chase Smith who ran for President in 1964 and borrows from 20th century film styles to create a complex portrait of the Senator from Maine, challenging historical narratives, cultural assumptions, and entrenched myths about American politics. While taking a sharp look at the McCarthy era, this summer’s presentation will echo the treacherous pitfalls of “hot takes” and the volatility of contemporary punditry.

From Declaration of Conscience, w/Margaret Chase Smith (MCS) & Bill Lewis
MCS: ... The Democrats won’t take on McCarthy. They want him in the Senate because his crazy makes their crazy look sane.
BILL: Makes America look bad.
MCS: Self serving blowhard. I’m a better commie hunter than him. Makes a mockery of the real menace out there. No wonder he wants to get rid of me.
BILL: He’s intimidated by you. Probably also attracted to you. Textbook Freud.
MCS: I don’t know about all of that, but I’m sure it’s true. But if not the Democrats then who?
BILL: You.
MCS: Me?
